band of the moment: lord cut-glass

i found a new band to love. his name is alun woodward, a former member of the scottish band, the delgados.

his first album as lord cut-glass came out last tuesday, and it’s like the decemberists + belle and sebastian. in other words, it’s fantastic.

but more than that lord cut-glass (it’s self-titled), reminds me so much of the best indie album of all time (arguably), in the aeroplane over the sea, the heralded release from neutral milk hotel.

something about arun woodward’s voice, its tone or ringing quality maybe, sounds like jeff mangum’s…to the point that it’s uncanny. to me, at least. and the songs are really weird. it takes a few listens to truly appreciate. and then youre like…”this is genius!!” (which is basically the essence of the nmh album, right?)

spinner is streaming it for free. listen to it and tell me what you think. they’ll probably take it down at the end of the week, or maybe even by the end of the day, so GET ON IT.
