•November 4, 2009 • Leave a Comment

npr is streaming norah jones’ new album, the fall, before it comes out later this month.

listen to the song she wrote with ryan adams, “light as a feather”, here. (sadly, no vocals from dRA.)

time to get in the christmas spirit.

this one isn’t really about people butchering a song; it’s more about why anyone would really create something like this in the first place. my friend allison showed me this one as we were discussing one of our favorite christmas songs, “baby it’s cold outside.”

her thoughts on the video were: “white trash meets white christmas” and “i don’t understand people.”

i echo those sentiments. wholeheartedly. especially the latter.

i watched a really good movie this morning (yes, morning) called lymelife. i won’t get into details, but if you like those character-driven dysfuctional family type movies like i do (think: the squid and the whale, junebug, lars and the real girl, igby goes down), you should watch it. 2 of the culkin brothers are in it, and so is julia roberts’ niece, who i think is sooo talented. also, alec baldwin and tim hutton. not a whole lot of plot action, but i thought it was excellent.

the film was scored by the director’s younger brother’s band, the spaceship martini, and i absolutely loved this song they played during the closing credits.

weezer and vamp wknd play dress up

•November 2, 2009 • 1 Comment

oh, you know. halloween! how did everyone celebrate?? i was in a car that got pushed by the spirits of murdered children over a haunted bridge, then almost got arrested for loitering in a cemetery while looking for a glowing blue tombstone. true story! i’m a grown up!

musicians celebrate halloween too! (“celebrities…they’re just like us!” -us weekly magazine) weezer played the hammerstein ballroom on saturday night. aside from covering “seven nation army,” “kids”, and “pokerface,” they were also dressed as bugs. i think? rivers looks like barney.

reminds me of honey i shrunk the kids. fun!

and vampire weekend played a secret, last minute, and FREE show in los angeles on halloween but didn’t dress up. but then they did the next night. you know, for dia de los muertos. ezra’s costume was “i won a $200 shopping spree at express for men,” and rostam’s was just plain awesome. .

i love how the most stoic band member is dressed the most ridiculously. hilarious. i dont think baio dressed up at all, and i think tomkins was a zombie beach boy? vampire beach boy?

athlete covers kings of leon’s “on call”

•November 2, 2009 • Leave a Comment

“on call” is probably my favorite kings of leon song.

kiiind of a bold statement considering that the band is currently being WAY over commercialized and over played. (see also: phoenix). like really it blows my mind a little when i hear “use somebody” (or i guess it’s “notion” now?) on the radio when the album came out over a year ago. go record a new album. enough is enough. this is a classic example of when a band’s talent is overshadowed by their annoying omnipresence. if you want to be appreciated, go away for a little while. im a snob, i know. (in case anyone cares, i’m finally getting to the point where i can hear “life in technicolor” without cringing.)

anyway, i found this video while i was searching for the one from the previous post. it’s allllright.

soooo who else kinda forgot that athlete existed?

apparently they released a new album in august and are planning to release it here in the u.s. too. so in honor of hearing about that today (months later, i know), i was going to post a song from black swan, but i just really didnt like any of the tracks. like, at all. too killers, switchfoot, keane-ish.

i mean, i consider myself to be a pretty band-loyal person, but after buying 3 athlete albums in the past 5 years, and only really liking one, i’m going to have to pass.

so instead, here’s my favorite athlete song, “half light.” it’s from 2005’s tourist, which got played countless times during my first semester of college.

jj redick’s a rapper now? (whyyyy)

•November 1, 2009 • Leave a Comment

no. please no.

like really.

deadspin is reporting that redick is heading a still nameless “supergroup” that is currently working on their first single, “waste management.”

no thanks.

personally, i think he should spend less time rapping and more time working on being a good basketball player and being humiliated less by stan van gundy.

and that is what i think about that.

although…congrats on today?

•October 28, 2009 • Leave a Comment

ooops, julian casablancas! you went on the tonight show and put on a performance that can best be described as extremely awkward. maybe you should have harnessed a little more energy and charisma. or asked for a mic stand.

what are you doing?!?

at least you’re attractive. hopefully, everyone will forget by tomorrow.

and the song sounds pretty okay. im still going to buy phrazes for the young next tuesday. here’s “11th dimension.”

oops, i forgot to do this yesterday.

this one’s a keeper. i’ve been watching it for weeks, and without fail, i crack up within 3 seconds every single time. soooooo creepy. it’s not her voice that’s bad. it’s…everything else.

from every girl’s favorite childhood movie, the little mermaid, “poor unfortunate souls.”
