ok, it’s finally time to address the wavves meltdown.

as most of you already know, the san diego band wavves suffered a complete meltdown last thursday night at the primavera sound festival in barcelona. the more i hear about this story, the more i can’t ignore how ridiculous (and somewhat tragic) the incident was.

generally speaking, ive heard not-so-great reviews of wavves’ live shows, and it seems that everything just kinda culminated into this one disastrous night.

they were supposed to go on at 2:20 am. due to a terrible soundcheck and complaints from the band, they started 15 minutes late. so nathan, the lead singer/guitarist starts playing completely out of tempo and drummer ryan is awkwardly trying to figure out a way to accompany him. 5 minutes of this and they decided to abruptly end the first song of the set. it probably went something like this:

here’s how pitchfork documented the rest of this sad, sad trainwreck.

“But things declined quickly from there, as between songs, Nathan began ineptly mocking the crowd (“Ooooooh, I’m on ecstasy!”), going off at length about his preference for California over Spain, and eventually telling them the festival was “one of the coolest things we’ve been part of in a while,” dripping with sarcasm. Finally, fed up with Nathan’s petulant behavior, Ryan ran out from behind his drumkit and poured a full cup of beer over Nathan’s head. The act would be met with their most enthusiastic applause of the evening.

At 3:00 a.m. sharp, having dodged their share of bottles and even a shoe (neither Nathan nor Ryan was hit, although Nathan likely made impact with some unlucky attendee upon forcefully returning the latter object back to the crowd), the show mercifully came to a screeching halt: Ryan ran offstage, throwing his drumsticks at Nathan. Infuriated, Nathan screamed into the mic, “Come back here, motherf*cker, we’re not done yet!” Immediately, stage crew appeared, breaking down Ryan’s kit. “F*ck!” Nathan shouted, “Stop doing that!” They didn’t, so Nathan decided the show must go on. Helplessly, he strummed his guitar again, clearly intent on playing another song. But as he stepped back to the mic, he realized it had been cut. As the crowd booed, the house lights came up, and a defeated Nathan Williams threw his hands up and left, along with the few remaining attendees.”

and to think this was only the 2nd night of their european tour. which they cancelled in its entirety, by the way.

nathan actually apologized for the meltdown on his blog. i’m so glad he realizes that “mixing ecstasy valium and xanax before having to play in front of thousands of people was one of the more poor decisions [he’s] made.”

it’s sad to see talented people self-destruct like this. hopefully he can get some help and start living a healthier lifestyle. i mean, if ryan adams can do it, wavves can do it.
