johnny flynn on world cafe

i know, i knowwww. you’re all tired of hearing about the guy.

but if you’re a fan, this is a must listen. jflynn talks about what he envisioned for been listening, how it compares to a larum, and how he’s always wanted to play hamlet. he also said that he tries not to broadcast his lyrics on paper because he likes when people hear what they hear.

i love that he’s not some egoistic headcase…he leaves the meaning of his art open to interpretation by the listener. i think the beauty of music is that the same song or even lyric can mean different things to different people; it’s all about the experience. obviously, artists create with intent, but they shouldn’t try to control the experience for anyone else.

ANYWAY. he performs (solo) “been listening,” “churlish may,” “the water,” and “lost and found.” consequently, all 4 of these tracks are in my top 5 favorites off been listening.

listen to the segment here.
