band of the moment: hey marseilles

this afternoon i’ve been catching up on npr’s tiny desk concerts, and this one caught my eye.

a group of 7 guys that includes cello, violin, trumpet, and accordion???? ummm count me in, please.

everyone say hey to hey marseilles! (so clever.)

yes, the lead singer looks like a young john malkovich. he’s also got an irish twang to his voice. (by the way, they’re a seattle band.)

the accordion gives their songs an eastern european feel; that’s what i like about their sound. it’s very…ethnic, for lack of a better word. i think the drums contribute to that too. listen to “from a terrace,” and see if you get that vibe too. (ffwd to 1:17 where it REALLY picks up.)

this is their most famous song, i think. it’s very brazilian, as the title implies, and it has got to be the most entertaining music video i have seen in a long time. (you can download the track for free on their website.)
